Brit. /ˌantɪsᵻˈmɪtɪk/, U.S. /ˌænˌtaɪsəˈmɪdɪk/, /ˌæn(t)isəˈmɪdɪk/
Forms: 1800s– antisemitic, 1800s– anti-semitic, 1800s– anti-Semitic.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; partly modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: anti- prefix, Semitic adj.
Etymology: < anti- prefix + Semitic adj. (compare sense 2b at that entry), in early use (e.g. in quots. 1879, 1881) frequently after German antisemitisch (1865). Compare earlier anti-Jewish adj. at anti- prefix 3a(a)(iii).Compare French antisémitique atypical of Semitic languages, cultures, or religions (1850 or earlier), anti-Jewish (1868 or earlier).
Characterized by prejudice, hostility, or discrimination towards Jewish people on religious, cultural, or ethnic grounds; anti-Jewish.Quot. 1851 appears to show an isolated use with uncertain significance, and long precedes the continental European movement of the 1870s and later (compare etymology note at anti-Semitism n.).
