单词 furol
释义

Furoln.adj.

Brit. /ˈfjʊərɒl/, U.S. /ˈfjʊrɑl/
Forms: also with lower-case initial.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: fuel n., road oil n. at road n. Compounds 6.
Etymology: < fu- (in fuel n.) + -rol (representing road oil n. at road n. Compounds 6, and perhaps also echoing -ol suffix). The term was apparently first suggested by W. F. Parish in 1920 (see quot. 1921).
Used attributively with reference to a modified form of the Saybolt viscometer (see Saybolt n. 2) with a large orifice, for use with oils of high viscosity. Also as adj. (as postmodifier). With Furol second (and second Furol) cf. Saybolt second n. at Saybolt n. 3.

1920 10th Ann. Rep. Director Bureau of Mines (U.S. Dept. Interior) 66 The other, the Saybolt ‘Furol’, viscosimeter is especially adapted for taking quickly the viscosity of heavy oils, such as fuel and road oils.
1921 Mining & Oil Bull. Mar. 239/1 At a meeting..held in September, 1920, W. F. Parish suggested that the instrument be called the ‘Saybolt furol viscosimeter’, the word ‘furol’ being a composite of ‘fuel and road oil’, thus indicating the particular uses for which the instrument is adapted... The Saybolt furol viscosimeter is identical with the Saybolt universal, except for the efflux tube.
1955 R. E. Kirk & D. F. Othmer Encycl. Chem. Technol. XIV. 763 Viscosity is normally reported simply as Saybolt Universal or Saybolt Furol seconds, but it may be converted to centistokes by means of appropriate tables.
1966 Code Federal Regulations: Title 41 §101-26.404-2 Fuel oil meeting Pacific Specification 400, and also having a viscosity not exceeding 300 seconds Furol at 122°F., will be accepted for Federal Grade 6.
1968 Encycl. Industr. Chem. Anal. VI. 295 The Saybolt Furol viscosity of a bituminous material is the time, in sec, that it takes 60 ml of sample to flow through the calibrated Furol orifice of the Saybolt viscometer tube, measured under carefully controlled conditions.
1993 J. W. Murdock Fund. Fluid Mech. for Practicing Engineer i. 37 For very viscous oils a larger orifice is used..and the time in seconds is called SSF (Saybolt Seconds Furol).
