An alkaloid, isolated from a species of snowdrop ( Galanthus woronowii) and from related plants, which acts as a selective acetylcholinesterase inhibitor and is used esp. in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.Galantamine has a tetracyclic structure including a seven-membered ring. U.S.S.R. 22 1941 In the examination of the mother liquors.., we succeeded in isolating a third alkaloid which proved to be a base not previously described in the literature; we have named it galantamine. 1956 Jrnl. Amer. Chem. Soc. 78 4145/2 Galanthamine was identified by its melting point, rotation, analysis [etc.]. 1960 Biochem. Pharmacol. 3 147 Galanthamine has been reported to inhibit cholinesterase, to be of benefit in myasthenia gravis, and to increase the sensitivity of muscle to acetylcholine. 1995 New Scientist 11 Feb. 21/1 Galanthamine..has stabilised the symptoms of some patients for up to a year in early trials of the drug. 2004 N.Y. Times Mag. 18 July 38/1 Galantamine has been shown to stimulate a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine, which is thought to heighten cognitive faculties, including those responsible for dreaming.
