Etymology: < funk n.2 + -y suffix1.In sense 2 apparently arising from the use of the adjective in sense 1 in ragtime songs in the early decades of the 20th cent., most famously in the lyrics of a rag often known as ‘Funky Butt’ or ‘Buddy Bolden's Blues’, which is reported to have been adopted as a signature song by African-American cornet player and bandleader Charles Joseph ‘Buddy’ Bolden (1877–1931) at his performances in New Orleans between c1900 and 1907; compare:1933 Louisiana Weekly 22 Apr. 6/2 The real words are unprintable but these will answer. Thought I heard old Bolden say Rotten gut Rotten gut! Take it away.1935 T.
