Origin: Probably a borrowing from Yiddish, combined with an English element. Etymons: Yiddish fonfn , -er suffix5.
Etymology: Probably < Yiddish fonfn to speak with a nasal twang (probably imitative) + -er suffix5.With the English forms perhaps compare also Yiddish fonfer braggart, boastful person (probably < either Polish fanfaron or Russian fanfaron , in the same senses, both < French fanfaron fanfaron n.).
