Origin: A borrowing from German, combined with an English element. Etymons: German Fulvosäure , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < fulv- (in German Fulvosäure (S. Odén 1919, in Kolloidchemische Beihefte 11 105); < classical Latin fulvus fulvous adj. + German -o- -o- connective + Säure acid) + -ic suffix; so called on account of its colour.
Chemistry.
fulvic acid n. a mixture of solid organic acids, usually brownish-yellow, that can be extracted from soil and is soluble in weak acid, alcohol, or water; any of the acids present in such a mixture, which are typically polyelectrolytes containing phenolic and carboxylic groups.Cf. humic acid at humic adj. (precipitated by acids).
