Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French fulminatoire; Latin fulminatorius.
Etymology: Partly (i) < Middle French fulminatoire thundering, fulminating (a1506 or earlier; French †fulminatoire ; < classical Latin fulmināt- , past participial stem of fulmināre fulminate v. + French -oire -ory suffix2), and partly (ii) < post-classical Latin fulminatorius (1564 or earlier; < classical Latin fulmināt- , past participial stem of fulmināre fulminate v. + -ōrius -ory suffix2). Compare Italian fulminatorio (a1607).
Of the nature of or resembling fulmination (in various senses); fierce, violent; vituperative.
