Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymons: Latin aqua ; water n.
Etymology: In sense 1, occurring as a graphic abbreviation for post-classical Latin aqua aqua n.1 in various post-classical Latin and borrowed phrases, as aqua regia n., etc. (see aqua n.1). In sense 2, a symbolic abbreviation for water n., after uses in sense 1.
Now rare.
