Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin apus, apodis.
Etymology: < classical Latin apus (genitive apodis), a kind of bird (not identified, perhaps a swift and hence so called on account of its short legs and small feet), in post-classical Latin also as constellation name ( J. Bayer Uranometria (1603) sig. Aaa) and in scientific Latin as genus name (see note) < ancient Greek ἄπους without feet (see apod(e adj.).On the history of use in sense 2 see note at sense. In sense 3 adopted as a genus name (in form Apos) in G. A. Scopoli Introductio ad historiam naturalem sistens genera lapidum, plantarum, et animalium (1777) 404 after Apus in J. C. Schäffer Der krebsartige Kiefenfuss mit der kurzen u. langen Schwanzklappe (1756) 131*; amended back to Apus in L. A. G. Bosc Hist. nat. des crustacés (1802) II. 242.
1. Astronomy. (The name of) a faint constellation near the south celestial pole; the Bird of Paradise. Also (in form Apodis) used as postmodifier in the names of stars belonging to this constellation. Abbreviated Aps (no point).
