Inflections: gainsaying, gainsaid, (rarely) gainsayed;
Etymology: < gain- prefix 1 + say v.1 Now a purely literary word, and slightly archaic. The stress is even or variable; the verbal noun is commonly ˈgainsaying. In gainsaid the last syllable is usually /-sɛd/.
