Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin Fuligula , -ine suffix¹.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Fuligula, former genus name (J. F. Stephens 1824, in G. Shaw Gen. Zool. XII. ii. 187; < classical Latin fūlīgō fuligo n. + -ula -ula suffix) + -ine suffix¹, after scientific Latin Fuligulinae, former subfamily name (1831 or earlier).

Ornithology. Now disused.

Of or belonging to the former subfamily Fuligulinae of sea ducks and diving ducks, which were characterized by their broadly lobed hind toes.The ducks of this group are now placed chiefly in the subfamilies Aythyinae and Merginae.
