Etymology: < the names of Charles Friedel (1832–99), French chemist, and J. M. Crafts (1839–1917), American chemist.
Chemistry.
Used attributively with reference to a method, discovered by Friedel and Crafts, of alkylating or acylating aromatic hydrocarbons or ketones by the use of anhydrous aluminium chloride (or a similar substance) as a catalyst.
