Origin: Probably a borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian funambolo.
Etymology: Probably < Italian funambolo (14th cent.) < classical Latin fūnambulus funambulus n. Compare slightly later funambulant n. and funambulus n., and also later funambulator n., funambule n., funambuler n., funambulist n.Compare Spanish funámbulo (1626; rare before mid 18th cent.).
Obsolete.
A person who walks or performs on a rope stretched between two points at some height above the ground; a tightrope walker; a funambulist. Also figurative.
