Etymology: Perhaps an alteration (after fresh adj.) of an unattested *fretlappe, the reflex of Old English frǣt-læppa, in the same sense ( < frǣt (see note) + lap n.¹). Compare dewlap n.Old English frǣt is cognate with Old Dutch frāt (Middle Dutch vraet , Dutch vraat , now rare), Old Saxon frāt (Middle Low German vrāt ), Old High German frāz (Middle High German vrāz , early modern German frass ), all in the sense ‘glutton’ < an ablaut variant (lengthened grade) of the Germanic base of fret v.¹ The dewlap appears to have been associated with the gullet, and hence with gluttony.
