Etymology: perhaps < fugae in the Law Latin phrase in meditatione fugae ‘contemplating flight’, occurring in the ‘fugie-warrant’ (see 2).Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈfugie.

A cock that will not fight; a runaway. Hence as a term of abuse, a coward.
