Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin fundus.
Etymology: < classical Latin fundus (see fund n.1). Compare slightly earlier fund n.1 4.In sense 1a perhaps short for fundus uteri n.
1. Anatomy. A part of a hollow organ, typically having a rounded shape and located furthest from the organ's outlet (hence resembling the base of a bottle or flask). Cf. earlier fundus uteri n.
a. The uppermost and widest part of the uterus, located above the openings of the uterine (Fallopian) tubes; (also) the entire part of the uterus above the cervix; = fundus uteri n.
