Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Old Frisian fullkuma , Old Dutch follakuman (Middle Dutch volcomen , Dutch †volkomen ), Middle Low German vulkōmen , Old High German folqueman , follaqueman (Middle High German volkomen ), all in senses ‘to come to an end’, ‘to attain completion’, etc. < the Germanic base of full adv. + the Germanic base of come v.In sense 2 probably after Middle Dutch volcomen in its transitive use in sense ‘to carry out, accomplish’, which has no parallel in the other Germanic languages. Compare also Middle Dutch volcomen (Dutch volkomen), Middle Low German vulkōmen, Middle High German volkomen (German vollkommen), all in senses ‘complete, perfect’ (originally uses as adjective of the past participles of the respective verbs).
