单词 fullage
释义

fullagen.2

Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; originally modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: full v.2, -age suffix.
Etymology: < full v.2 + -age suffix, originally after French †foullage money paid for the fulling of cloth (1567 or earlier in Middle French in this sense; 15th cent. as foulage in sense ‘feudal tax due to an overlord for pressing grapes’, 16th cent. also in sense ‘action of fulling cloth’ (so French foulage)). N.E.D. (1898) includes a sense ‘Refuse, street-sweepings, filth’, but the evidence for this may more convincingly be accounted for as compositorial error for or misreading of sullage n. (which is found elsewhere in the same text):1780 A. Young Tour Ireland i. 7 They go much to Dublin for fullage of the streets to lay on their hay grounds.
Obsolete. rare.
Money paid for the fulling of cloth.
