单词 franklin
释义

franklinn.1

Brit. /ˈfraŋklᵻn/, U.S. /ˈfræŋklən/
Forms: Middle English francoleyn, Middle English fraunkeleyn, Middle English–1500s frank(e)le(i)n, -(e)leyn, (Middle English fran(c)kelain, -layn(e, Middle English franklon), 1500s–1800s fran(c)klin(g, -lyn(g, 1500s– franklin.
Etymology: First recorded as Anglo-Latin franc-colanus , francalanus , franchelanus (12–13th cent.); it appears as Anglo-Norman fraunclein a1307 (Du Cange s.v. Franchilanus). The ultimate formation is clearly from medieval Latin francus , Old French franc frank adj.2; but the process of formation is somewhat obscure. The suffix is usually supposed to represent the Old High German -linc , -ling suffix1. This is possible, but the analogy of chamberlain n. is not quite conclusive, as there is no trace of an Old High German *franclinc or Latin *franclingus, nor on the other hand does Latin *camerlānus appear. Possibly francalānus may be < the adjective francālis ‘having the rights of a freeman’, < francus. The earliest spelling franccolanus suggests that the word was in 1200 supposed to be a compound.
