Etymology: < Old French franc encens: see frank adj.2 and incense n. The special meaning of the adjective in this combination seems to be ‘of high quality’: see frank adj.2 5.
1. An aromatic gum resin, yielded by trees of the genus Boswellia, used for burning as incense; olibanum; occasionally the smoke from the same.
