Forms: Middle English fortalys, fortalyce, fortilitie, 1500s fortilesse, fortilage, fortelleze, fortelace, 1600s, 1800s fortiless, 1800s fortalise, 1500s– fortalice.
Etymology: The surviving form, which is also the earliest recorded, is < medieval Latin fortalitia , fortalitium , a derivative of fortis strong; cf Provençal fortaleza , Spanish fortaleza , Portuguese fortaleza , Italian fortalizio , fortilizio , Old French fortelesce (compare the parallel formation forteresce fortress n.). Some of the obsolete forms are from French or other Romanic languages.
In early use = fortress n.; by modern writers chiefly used for: ‘A small outwork of a fortification’ (W.); a small fort.
