Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin angiospermus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin angiospermus (1691 or earlier; < angio- angio- comb. form + ancient Greek -σπερμος : see -spermous comb. form) + -ous suffix. Compare angiosperm n., angiospermatous adj. Compare also angiomonospermous adj.Compare French angiosperme (1740).
Botany.
Originally (of a plant): †having flowers that contain single seeds (obsolete rare); having seeds contained in a capsule or other recognizable seed vessel (now rare). In later use: designating flowering plants of a division characterized by having ovules enclosed in an ovary or carpel; of, relating to, or characteristic of such plants.Contrasted with gymnospermous adj.
