Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin angeiologia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin angeiologia that part of anatomy which relates to the vessels in the human body (1649 or earlier; earlier in a different sense: see note) < angeio- angio- comb. form + -logia -logy comb. form.Compare French angeiologie (1641 or earlier; 1573 or earlier in Middle French denoting incision into the veins of the head). Compare also post-classical Latin angiologia (1532 or earlier), Hellenistic Greek ἀγγειολογία, both denoting incision into the veins of the head. Compare the following earlier example of post-classical Latin angiologia in this sense in an English context:1542 T. Elyot Bibliotheca Angiologia, is a poynte of surgery in the vaines of the temples hyd, being deuided from temple to temple in depenes.
Originally: a branch of anatomy that deals with blood and lymphatic vessels (and, in early use, other structures regarded as vessels). In later use also: a branch of medicine dealing with the study and treatment of diseases of blood and lymphatic vessels.
