Forms: Middle English fraunciplegge, 1500s frankepledge, 1500s–1700s fran(c)(k)ple(d)ge, 1500s– frankpledge.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman franc-plege (Latinized franciplegium ), < franc frank adj.2 + plege pledge n.; apparently a Norman mistranslation of Old English friþ-borh peace-pledge (see frithborh n.), friþ having been supposed to be connected with free.
