单词 franconian
释义

Franconiann.adj.

Brit. /fraŋˈkəʊnɪən/, U.S. /fræŋˈkoʊniən/
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element; originally modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: proper name Franconia , -an suffix.
Etymology: < Franconia, the name of a region in Germany (post-classical Latin Franconia (mid 12th cent. or earlier), Middle French, French Franconie (1598 or earlier)) + -an suffix, originally after Middle French, French Franconien, noun (1553 in the passage translated in quot. 1593 at sense A. 1), and adjective (1600 in the passage translated in quot. 1608 at sense B.). With sense A. 3 compare earlier Frankish adj. 3 and Francic adj. (compare e.g. quot. 1782 at Francic adj.).Franconia is attested as a place name in English contexts from at least the late 14th cent. onwards. Compare German Franken Franconia (Middle High German franken , Old High German in francōn ‘in the land of the Franks’). In sense A. 3 after German Fränkisch the language of the ancient Franks (see Frankish adj. 3), usually in compounds such as Altfränkisch Old Franconian (1775 or earlier), Altniederfränkisch Old Low Franconian (1873 in a work title; compare quot. 1894 at sense A. 3), etc.; as simplex usually denoting the contemporary High German dialect of Franconia. With the English preference for Franconian rather than Frankish in this sense perhaps compare preference for Saxon (see especially Old Saxon n. 2) over Saxish.
