单词 franco-
释义

Franco-comb. form

Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is usually maintained on the first syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. Franco-Irish Brit. /ˌfraŋkəʊˈʌɪrɪʃ/, U.S. /ˌfræŋkoʊˈaɪrɪʃ/.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Franco-.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Franco-, combining form (in e.g. Francogallia , a name for France (1573 in the title of the work translated in quots. 17111, 17112)) of Franci , the name of the Franks or the French (see Frank n.1). Compare French franco- . Compare Gallo- comb. form1 2 and French adj. and n. Compounds 1a(a).Formations in French are found occasionally in the 16th and 17th centuries (although apparently only in isolated attestations; compare francophile Francophile adj., francophilie Francophilia n.) and subsequently from the late 18th cent. (compare e.g. Francomanie Francomania n., franco-italien (1799 or earlier)). They do not become common until the 20th cent. Formations in English are found from the second half of the 17th cent. The earliest examples all have parallels in Latin and in most cases are modelled on these. With quot. 1669 compare post-classical Latin franco-theotiscus relating to Old High German (1669 in the Latin part of the bilingual parallel text cited in that quotation; it is unclear whether the English or the Latin text is primary; compare theodisc adj.). From the late 18th cent. onwards the models, if any, are usually French (compare e.g. Francomanie Francomania n.). With Franco-Canadian compare French franco-canadien (1833 or earlier); compare earlier French Canadian adj., and slightly earlier Canadian French adj. With Franco-American compare earlier French-American adj. at French adj. and n. Compounds 1a(a). With Franco-Prussian compare German franko-preußisch (1795, now usually preußisch-französisch).
Forming adjectives and nouns with the sense ‘French (occasionally Frankish) and——’, or ‘regarding France, the French, or French-speakers’, as Franco-American, Franco-Canadian, Franco-Gallican, Franco-Gauls, Franco-German, Franco-Irish, Franco-negroid, Franco-Prussian, Franco-Roman, etc. Cf. Anglo- comb. form 1b.
