Origin: A borrowing from French. Perhaps also partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French franchisement ; franchise v., -ment suffix.
Etymology: < Middle French franchisement, Middle French, French franchissement liberation, action of setting free (second half of the 13th cent. in Old French), exemption from an obligation (1335) < franchiss- , lengthened stem of franchir to make free (see franchise v.) + -ment -ment suffix. In later use perhaps partly < franchise v. + -ment suffix. Compare earlier franchise n., franchise v.
