Etymology: < French franc-tireur (1792) < franc free from obligation (see Frank adj.¹) + tireur soldier who uses a firearm (1636, earlier in Middle French in sense ‘soldier who uses a bow or crossbow, archer’ (1447)) < tirer to shoot a bow, etc. (1422), to use a firearm (c1500; specific use of tirer to draw: see tire v.²) + -eur -eur suffix.
