Etymology: < four o'clock at four adj. 2b.In sense 1 so called with reference to the plant's blossoms opening in the late afternoon. In sense 2 so called with reference to the bird's call, perceived to be reminiscent of the words four o'clock . With sense 3 compare clock n.1 9.
1. (More fully four o'clock flower.) A name for the plant Mirabilis Jalapa or Marvel of Peru.
