Etymology: < ante- prefix + predicament n., after post-classical Latin antepredicamenta, plural (14th cent. in a British source), itself after ancient Greek τὰ πρὸ τῶν κατηγοριῶν, lit. ‘the things before the categories’.
Logic. Chiefly historical.
Usually in plural. Any of various concepts or relations treated at the beginning of Aristotle’s Categories, before the discussion of the categories (the predicaments) themselves; a concept necessary for understanding the Aristotelian categories. See predicament n. 1, category n. 1a. Cf. postpredicament n.
