Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: free adv., wheel v.
Etymology: < free adv. + wheel v. (compare wheel v. 9). Compare free wheel n., and also free-wheeling n.
1. intransitive. To ride a bicycle without the use of the pedals, allowing it to proceed under its own momentum, to coast. Of a motor vehicle or its driver: to drive without engaging the clutch. Also: to operate as a free wheel.
