Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin anno domini.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin anno domini ‘in the year of (our) Lord’ (13th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin annō , ablative of annus year (see annals n.) + dominī , genitive of dominus lord (see Dominical adj.). Compare A.D. adv. at A n. Initialisms, and also earlier Anno Dom. adv. and the year of our Lord at lord n. and int. Phrases 2a.
A. adv.
Preceding (or in later use following) a date: in the year coming the specified number of years since the birth of Jesus; in the specified year of the Christian era. Usually abbreviated a.d. (see A.D. adv.). Cf. Common Era n.Anno Domini is occasionally used after prepositions in phrases such as about Anno Domini 220, as if it were a noun with the sense ‘the specified year of the Christian era’.The practice of counting the years from the birth of Jesus was introduced by Dionysius Exiguus in 532, but it is now recognized that his birth was probably several years before a.d. 1, though some authorities assign it to a.d. 6.
