Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin annō, annus.
Etymology: < classical Latin annō, ablative of annus year (see annals n.). Compare Anno Domini adv., Anno Dom. adv.
Now archaic.
Preceding a date: in the specified year of the Christian era. Cf. Anno Domini adv.Anno is occasionally used after prepositions in phrases such as before anno 1680, as if it were a noun with the sense ‘the specified year of the Christian era’.
