Forms: 1600s anniuerse, 1600s–1800s anniverse.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with another borrowing from Latin. Or perhaps (ii) formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymons: Latin annī , annus , versus ; anniversary n.
Etymology: Either (i) < classical Latin annī, genitive of annus year (see annals n.) + classical Latin versus action or fact of turning (see verse n.), or perhaps (ii) shortened < anniversary n., after e.g. universe n. (perhaps originally for the purposes of rhyme: compare quot. 1618).
Obsolete (rare after 18th cent.). Chiefly poetic.
The day which marks the completion of one or more years since the death or funeral of a particular person, and on which he or she is commemorated in some way; = anniversary n. 1.
