Etymology: < ante- prefix + classical Latin nātus born, past participle of nāscī to be born (see nascent adj.) + -ed suffix1. Compare post-classical Latin antenatus (adjective) firstborn, eldest (from late 12th cent. in British sources), (of a document) older (13th cent. in a British source), (noun) stepson (a636 in Isidore), elder person (11th cent.).
