Etymology: Irregularly < fossil n. + -logy comb. form, perhaps after mineralogy n. Compare later fossilology n.The author of the earliest cited instance (compare quot. 1776) apparently claims not to have invented the word: 1776 in G. Edwards Elements Fossilogy Advt. It is a rule of grammar, that no compound word is to be formed of other words, which are of different languages: the terms Fossilogy and Minerology, are a violation of this rule; but we beg leave to make use of one of these terms rather than invent a new one, and we prefer the former to the latter.
