As noun < post-classical Latin antalgicum, use as noun of antalgicus (both early 17th cent. or earlier) < ant- , variant (before a vowel) of anti- anti- prefix + ancient Greek ἄλγος pain (see -algia comb. form) + classical Latin -icus -ic suffix.
