Etymology: < post-classical Latin antagonisticus (1617 or earlier) < antagonista antagonist n. + -icus -ic suffix. Compare earlier antagonistical adj. and antagonist adj. Compare also agonistic adj.
1. Of the nature of antagonists; mutually opposed; incompatible. Later also: displaying antagonism towards someone or something; actively opposed, hostile (frequently with to).
