单词 angelin
释义

angelinn.

Brit. /ˈan(d)ʒᵻlɪn/, U.S. /ˈændʒələn/
Forms:

α. 1500s 1700s–1800s angelina.

β. 1600s–1800s angeline, 1600s– angelin, 1900s– angelim.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Dutch. Partly a borrowing from Portuguese. Etymons: Dutch angelina; Portuguese angelim.
Etymology: Partly (i) < Dutch †angelina, †angelin, denoting Artocarpus hirsuta, the Asian tree (1596 in the passage translated in quot. 1598), and partly (ii) < Portuguese angelim, denoting both Asian and American trees (1514 as amgelim), both < Malayalam āññili, āññali < Tamil ācini heartwood, especially that of Artocarpus hirsuta. In the European languages, the final syllable may have been influenced by the suffix classical Latin -īna (feminine of -īnus ), or the related Portuguese -im , etc. (see -ine suffix4). Compare also angely wood , angeli wood , anjeli wood , etc., the wood of Artocarpus hirsuta (19th cent.; apparently directly < Malayalam āññili + wood n.1).
