Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French fondant.
Etymology: < French fondant type of soft sugar paste, item of confectionery made from or filled with this paste (both late 19th cent.), specific uses as noun of the present participle of fondre to melt (see found v.3).The uses as adjective appear to have originated within English and lack a parallel in French.

1. A type of soft, creamy icing or sugar paste used for filling or coating cakes, pastries, confectionery, etc. In later use also: smooth icing of a dough-like consistency used for covering cakes or making cake decorations.
