Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian fondaco.
Etymology: < Italian fondaco, †fundaco, (regional: Venice) †fontego, †fondego building or group of buildings containing the residence and sale rooms of foreign merchants (beginning of the 13th cent., earliest as fontego ), (in extended use) shop (early 13th cent.), inn (early 14th cent.), customs house (early 14th cent.) < Arabic fundaq (see fonda n.).In the plural form fondachi after the Italian plural form.
Now historical.
Chiefly in Italy and Egypt: an inn or lodging where foreign merchants reside, store goods, and conduct trade. Also more generally: an inn. Cf. funduq n.
