Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French angarie.
Etymology: < French angarie requisition of ships by the state (1798 or earlier in this sense), specific sense development of angarie feudal levy, oppression, vexation (16th cent. in Middle French; already c1310 in Old French in the sense ‘mental torture, anguish’) < classical Latin angaria (see angariate v.).In right of angary after French droit d'angarie (1798 or earlier).
International Law.
In full right of angary. The right of a state engaged in war to appropriate neutral property for military purposes or, if necessary, to destroy it, subject to paying the owner full compensation for the loss after the cessation of hostilities. Cf. requisition n. 4b.
