Etymology: < French anfractuosité each of the sinuous depressions separating the convolutions of the brain, (chiefly in plural) winding cavity or depression in the ear, the surface of a bone, etc. (both 1503 in Middle French), (in anatomy) sinuousness (of a duct, passage, etc.) (1555) < post-classical Latin anfractuosus anfractuous adj. + Middle French -ité -ity suffix. Compare earlier anfractuous adj.Compare Spanish anfractuosidad (1555), Italian anfrattuosità (a1758). With the form in am- compare the forms and note at anfractuous adj.
