An opening or orifice, a hole or short passage, for the protrusion of an organ, or for the performance of organic functions. In various applications in Anatomy, Zoology, etc. In Botany esp. the foramen of an ovule (see quot. 1866). Also with defining name, as foramen of Magendie n. [described by François Magendie (1783–1855), French physiologist] the median aperture in the roof of the fourth ventricle of the brain. foramen of Monro n. [described by Alexander Monro (1733–1817), Scottish anatomist] a foramen in the brain connecting the third ventricle with each of the two lateral ventricles; the interventricular foramen. foramen of Morgagni n. see Morgagni n. foramen of Winslow n. [described by Jakob Benignus Winslow (1669–1760), Danish anatomist] a narrow passage connecting the lesser sac and the greater sac of the peritoneal cavity of the abdomen; the epiploic foramen.
