Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French annelide.
Etymology: < French annelide ( J. B. Lamarck Recherches sur l'organisation des corps vivans (1802) i. 24) < post-classical Latin annellus (16th cent.), variant of classical Latin ānellus small ring (see aneus n.) + French -ide (compare -id suffix3). Compare French annelés , lit. ‘ringed’ (Lamarck's term describing his first subdivision of Invertebrata) and later Annelida n.
