Freedom of Information Act; a law which permits individuals to request the public release of documents or data in the possession of a government or its agencies; frequently attributive in FOIA request. Since 1966, when the Freedom of Information Act was first enacted in the United States, many English-speaking countries including Australia, Ireland, and the United Kingdom have instituted legislation with the same name.
