Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French annat; Latin annāta.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French annat, annate (French (now historical) annat ) revenues deriving from a bishopric or an abbacy during the first year after the nomination or confirmation of a bishop or abbot by the Pope, accruing to the Curia (a1400), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin annāta (feminine singular) revenues deriving from a bishopric or an abbacy during the first year after the nomination or confirmation of a bishop or abbot by the Pope, accruing to the Curia (13th cent.; from 15th cent. in British sources), one half of the revenues deriving from a lower prebend during the first year after the accession of a new titular nominated by the Pope, which half accrued to the Curia (14th cent.) < classical Latin annus year (see annals n.) + -āta -ate suffix1.Compare Italian annata (a1525), German Annate (mid 15th cent.; chiefly in plural), both in sense 2.
1. Scots Law. Frequently in form annat. A half-year's salary, legally due to the executors of the will of a deceased minister of the Church of Scotland, paid in addition to any stipend owing at the time of the minister's death. Also shortened to ann (see ann n.). Obsolete (historical and rare in later use).The payment of annats was formally abolished by the Abolition of Feudal Tenure (Scotland) Act 2000, but it had been discontinued long before.

2. Ecclesiastical Law (chiefly historical). A payment, usually representing the amount of the first year's income, formerly paid by each new holder of an ecclesiastical benefice to a superior (originally the Papal Treasury, and in England after the Reformation, to the Crown). Frequently in plural.Also called first fruits (see first fruit n. 3). In the Church of England, these payments were directed to be used to provide a fund to augment the livings of the poorer clergy in 1704 (see Queen Anne's Bounty n. at Queen Anne n. 1a), and were finally abolished in 1926.
