1. An instrument or device (on a ship or on shore) used to produce a loud noise as a warning to shipping in foggy conditions.Originally foghorns were wind instruments blown by a person; from the mid 19th cent. onwards various types of mechanized foghorns were introduced, using steam or compressed air, and electrically powered foghorns appeared in the 20th cent.
