Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese anma.
Etymology: < Japanese anma (also transcribed as amma, reflecting the pronunciation) form of massage, the person administering it (both 8th cent.) < Middle Chinese (already in Old Chinese; compare Chinese ànmó to massage, literally ‘to push (with the hands) and rub’, also as noun ‘action of massaging, massage’).The Chinese word has also been borrowed into English more recently as anmo (late 20th cent.), with reference to the related Chinese form of massage (compare tui na n.).
1. A person who practises a form of traditional Japanese massage therapy in which pressure is applied to certain points on the body using the hands. Now rare.Originally and traditionally, anmas were blind (see e.g. quot. 1877).Now much less common than sense 2.
