单词 foeman
释义

foemann.

Brit. /ˈfəʊmən/, U.S. /ˈfoʊmən/
Forms: see foe adj. and n. and man n.1; also early Old English fahmon, late Old English fagman.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: foe adj., man n.1
Etymology: < foe adj. + man n.1In late Old English the prefixed form gefāhmann is also attested (see variant reading in quot. eOE; apparently < i-fo adj. + man n.1), and survives into early Middle English:a1225 (?OE) MS Vesp. in R. Morris Old Eng. Homilies (1868) 1st Ser. 241 Ne nanman ne fiht buton wið his ifomenn. It is unclear whether the Old English evidence (for either word) shows a true compound or a syntactic combination of adjective and noun.
Now chiefly archaic or literary.
A foe, an enemy, esp. in warfare. Later also in weakened sense: an adversary, an opponent.
